The Effect of Aquoeus Extract of Pegagan Leaves (Centella asiatica L.) on Cognition and the Level of Monoamine Neurotransmitters in the Hippocampus of Old Male Rats (Rattus norvegicus L.)

Summary
Pegagan (Centella asiatica) has been scientifically proven influence the central nervous system (CNS), particularly in improving energy stimulation to brain nerves as well as to enhance learning and memory process. The aim of the research was to investigate the effect of aqueous extract of C. asiatica leaves on cognition and the level of monoamines (dopamine, norepinephrine, epinephrine, dan serotonine) in the hippocampus of old male wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus L.). Fifty old male wistar rats (16 weeks in age, body weight range 250-300 g, x = 289.394 ? 2.266 g) were divided into five group which consisted of ten individual in each group. Two control groups were established (one group of control blank, CB; and a group received only aquabidest, CS), and three treatment groups received aqueous extract of C. asiatica leaves with doses of 100 (T1), 200 (T2) and 300 (T3) mg / kg body weight. The aqueous extract of C. asiatica leaves were given by oral injection during eight weeks and at the same time the cognition tests using water-E maze were done once a week. By the end of examination, rats were decapitated and the brain?s hippocampus were isolated in order to measure the level of monoamines using High Performance Liquid Chromatography. Results showed that the treatment groups were significantly quicker to reach the target and had fewer errors to reach the goal in the water-E maze compared to the control group (P<0,05). size="2"> Keywords: Centella asiatica, monoamine neurotransmitters, water-E maze, learning process, memory, Rattus norvegicus
